Orthodox New Year for the year 2012 is celebrated/ observed on Saturday, January 14th.

The Orthodox New Year, also known as the Old New Year, is on January 14th on the Gregorian calendar. It is celebrated in the Julian calendar as the start of the New Year and is January 1st on the Julian calendar. Orthodox Christian Americans will celebrate the day on the Julian calendar January 1st, which is Janaury 14th on the Gregorian calendar.

Other Countries different Dates

Russia switched over to the Gregorian calendar in 1918 but the Orthodox Russian Church continued to use the Julian calendar. In Russia today they celebrate the New Years with the Gregorian January 1st date and get additional days off January 1-5 and if weekends come up they get to extend the days off.

Kazakhstan, Montenegro, Moldova, Malanka Ukraine, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Armenia, Palestine, Serbia, Macedonia, and the Scottish Gaelic all celebrate the Old New Year (Julian calendar New Year) with some celebrating on January 12th or 13th or 14th and some on the 15th. Remember the Julian New Year changes over time as compared to the Gregorian calendar so in the years 1583 to 1700 it was January 11th, 1700 to 1800 January 12th, 1801 to 1900 January 13th, 1901 to 2100 January 14th, and 2101 to 2200 January 15th and so forth. Hence many cultures around the world will celebrate Orthodox New year on different dates as related to the Gregorian calendar.
